With her wardrobes of weirdness featuring everything from hair tangled into telephone shapes and glittering lobster face masks, Lady Gaga does more than strike a pose. She commands the attention of everyone in the room, whether they’re clued into her catchy chart-topping synth-pop or not.

But as bizarre as she seems, she didn’t simply emerge from the ether (she’d love to have you believe that, though). As a matter of fact, there are a number of pop celebrities that Gaga owes a great debt to. These pioneers didn’t just challenge the traditional notions of music, but of culture, as well—something she’s trying, in her shimmery, pop star way, to do herself.

So who’s on the list?

David Bowie: Number one with a bullet. Bowie made losing oneself in the rock star persona more theatrical, stretching into a kind of pop-cultural kabuki. Some people got it, others were terribly put off. As Ziggy Stardust, he represented the space face of the future, a rock ‘n’ rollin’ bitch with a raygun to his head. As the Thin White Duke, he became gaunter, full of energy (supplied largely from cocaine) but hollow inside. And throughout the period of the Berlin Trilogy, his music grew weirder, more experimental, and so were his outfits.

Like Gaga herself, Bowie played with androgyny as a way to shock more conservative cultural forces. But he also did it to express a kind of inclusivity. At the time, people wondered whether he was really a woman, or really gay. They wonder the same things about Gaga, speculating on whether she really has guy parts under those shiny dresses.

Madonna: The Material Girl is the most commonly cited pop figure when you read articles about Gaga. It makes sense—both took the idea of the female pop star and twisted it into a kind of performance art. Britney Spears is living that performance art, but doesn’t seem to consciously realize it; Gaga and Madonna are clearly cut from the same cloth as calculating entertainers that now how to provoke, how to keep things interesting and how to make heaps of money at the same time.

Lady Gaga certainly flaunts an open sexuality as Madonna did, but while Madonna dressed up like a virgin, Gaga’s imagery looks like it’s borrowed from a New York art gallery. One thing is for sure: Both stars may act vacuous, but both know exactly what they’re doing, as well.

Andy Warhol: This is perhaps the oddest influence of all, but the one that Gaga may have learned the most from. A recent New York Magazine article about Gaga says that she treated Warhol’s published diaries as a kind of Bible. He was figure who understood celebrity culture perfectly. The world is a plastic world, he said, where everyone gets 15 minutes. While some have claimed he was a rather shallow person for stating that, others could argue he was simply acknowledging a sad truth about the culture we live in and make ourselves. Rather than judging it, though, he reveled in it.

Gaga seems to get that pretty well.

Pop music never sounds as sweet to the music press as the yowling of an epic cat fight, and the claws are out when it comes to chart-topping singer and fashionista Lady Gaga. Gaga is a polarizing figure on her own, straddling both the art world with her bizarre wardrobe while forging a successful pop career.

On the other end of the musical spectrum is Joanna Newsom, the teensy harpist with a distinctive voice known for her long and eloquently worded baroque pop. Newsom has earned some attention for wearing flashy clothing on stage as well, but nothing as garish as Alexander McQueen’s “lobster shoes” or telephone-shaped hair-dos. Incidentally, she recently told The Guardian that Gaga’s schtick is all sound and fury, signifying nothing—and borrowed sound and fury, at that.

“Her approach to image is really interesting, but you listen to the music, and you just hear glow sticks,” Newsome said while musing on the subject of modern pop. “Smart outlets for musical journalism give her all this credit, like she’s the new Madonna … Although I’m coming from a perspective of also thinking Madonna is not great at all. I’m like, fair enough: she is the new Madonna, but Madonna’s a dumb-ass!”

In the same interview—for a meandering feature on the pint-sized folkie—she admitted to having made some dumb, stray comments to the press in the past. Perhaps sensing she should pick her words carefully, she emailed The Guardian a clarification, adding that she doesn’t think Madonna is dumb, but hasn’t been impressed by her music in a long while. And on the subject of Gaga: “My problem isn’t actually with Lady Gaga. But there’s not much in her music to distinguish it from other glossy, formulaic pop. She just happens to wear slightly weirder outfits than Britney Spears … She’s Arty Spice!”

Newsom added that while Gaga markets her sexuality as much as Spears, there’s an inauthenticity to it. She points to electro artist Peaches and the original fashionista pop star Grace Jones as precursors who were more original.

The mention of Jones couldn’t have been an accident. Jones recently said rather plainly that she thinks Gaga is a rip-off artist, borrowing the same looks that Jones herself took on during the ’80s. In a separate Guardian piece, Jones said she wouldn’t collaborate with Gaga: “I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually.”

So far, there hasn’t been much public response from Gaga on all this criticism. And while music critics debate the merits of Gaga’s take on pop, her fans seem to eat up her singles without hesitation. She’s sitting on top of the charts and has one of the hottest summer tour’s going this year, with stops all across the country.

As usual, Lady Gaga has her hands full. Although representatives from American Idol have yet to confirm the news, MTV.com reported on Gaga’s latest tweet, which seems to suggest that she will be making an appearance on American Idol; she wrote, “See you on American Idol. May 5th, Little Monsters.”

Even without Idol, Gaga is still planning on getting some TV time as the star will be featured on the hit series Glee. Actor Cory Monteith was quoted on MTV.com as saying, “Her music and her influence on pop music right now, it’s so well expressed by ‘Glee.’ The way that episode goes with Lady Gaga’s music is amazing.”

Most recently, Gaga appeared in the music video (along with Beyonce) for “Telephone.” It was, in a nutshell, all Gaga. No stranger to controversy, Lady Gaga is encountering a media storm over her latest single, “Alejandro.” Monsters and Critics reports that Gaga’s label wanted “Dance in the Dark” to be her next single, but she chose “Alejandro” instead. According to a report by Gig Wise, Sir Elton John wants to follow in Beyonce’s footsteps by recording a duet with Lady Gaga in the future. The pair performed a duet at the Grammy Awards back in February, and Sir Elton is quoted as telling People Magazine that he is “really pleased” that Lady Gaga is being considered to record the theme song for the next James Bond film and hopes they can record a duet in the future. Even for a pop star who is part New York fashion scene and part art school diva, Lady Gaga is pretty weird. Initial reactions to the 24-year-old’s eye-popping costumes—which sometimes bared too much, other times hid her in fabric or fur—was mostly defined by befuddlement. People weren’t sure what to make of this figure that filled the void of pop stars like Britney Spears with runway weirdness.

In time Gaga’s music caught on and, with her outlandish music videos, soared to the top of the charts. But despite her success, she’s still a relatively divisive figure, and it’s not just run of the mill music critics or listeners who find her success objectionable.

A series of celebrities have sounded off recently about Gaga’s meteoric rise, largely arguing that her praise is largely undeserved. The celeb with the sharpest words is undoubtedly one of Gaga’s early influences—’80s pop star and model Grace Jones.

Jones was known for shocking mainstream listeners with bizarre poses and outfits, too, and claims Gaga didn’t just borrow the concept of doing that. She even borrowed some of the outfits.

“I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off,” Jones told The Guardian during an interview. She also admitted—after some curt, evasive comments—that Gaga approached her about collaborating, but was turned down: “I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually.”

Gaga next earned the ire of alternative folk-pop artist Joanna Newsom, whose bafflement over the young pop star’s rise almost spilled over into pique. In an unrelated Guardian interview, Newsom said Gaga is the new Madonna, but added that she has a very low opinion of Madonna. She later rectified her comments, saying she really doesn’t have a problem with Gaga as a person, but she doesn’t quite buy her as the model of a pop revolutionary.

“She just happens to wear slightly weirder outfits than Britney Spears,” Newsom said. “But they’re not that weird – they’re mostly just skimpy … she’s Arty Spice! And, meanwhile, she seems to take herself so oddly seriously, the way she talks about her music in the third person, like she’s Brecht or something. She just makes me miss Cyndi Lauper.”

Lauper would certainly be glad to hear it, though there’s no word (as of yet) of her own take on Gaga. A very different pop star—Donny Osmond—weighed in recently as well, claiming Gaga’s epic music video for “Telephone” went over the line in terms of appropriate marketing material. The video features Gaga in skimpy outfits in jail, then driving off across a desert with Beyonce to poison (very non-graphically) an entire roadside diner. “I wouldn’t want my child to watch this video,” Osmond said in a public release.
